another insight into why regional airports could be an answer to the current flight slot issues in the UK and why regional airports like our very own DSA with a different allocation of slots could make a difference to aviation in the UK this could also be used as part of the so called leveling up process

Manchester Airport Terminal 1 - latest hilarity. What is it this time to add to the catalogue of ineptitude, you ask? After Customs, there are three one way security doors to ensure the people flow is only Out to Arrivals and not In (excited friends and relatives). You’ve seen them. A sliding or opening door and then a second door once inside the sealed unit.Very effective as they can also be locked to stop “runners” escaping into the UK from passport control and customs. So what’s the issue? Two of the three at T1 are broken. The one remaining door is tied at the front end, with string, to keep it open.Very professional, leading to this queue. So, T1 now relies on string to function.

An article on Head for Points to explain the current UK airport slot consultation that is underway.👇 https://lnkd.in/eRr29raG👆 I cannot help thinking that this consultation misses a trick in considering only the most congested airports in the UK and how airlines try to cling on to slots at major hubs like Heathrow [BA] and Gatwick [Easy Jet]. It does not consider how, if we changed the ground transportation to our regional airports, including ones like DSA, that it would give airlines more chance of working up a business case to use them. Slots are ultimately a function of too much demand in a particular location. Spreading the demand around more airports will lead to less slot pressure. Totally impossible though without much better ground transportation options.Unfortunately, as a result, the consultation is of little direct relevance to the battle to save DSA, but does give us chance to, once again, remind government that regional airports are one of the keys to levelling up. I know the government is long in the tooth now [an election looming] and I get the feeling that Ministers may have run out of batteries for their hearing aids. We can but try though. A letter may help as we know some of those previously in senior positions have used Specsavers.Doncaster Chamber Save Doncaster Sheffield Airport Business Doncaster Sheffield Chamber of Commerce South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Oliver Coppard Damian Allen Lee Tillman Scott Cardwell Daniel Fell

The competitive tenderto market for a new Sydney Airport Slot Manager was released earlier this week. This is part of the Australian Government's overarching reforms to the slot management mechanism at the airport. Whilst reading up on the various initiatives proposed to date, here is a simple diagram that I have compiled to help visualise/refresh my own memories of Sydney Airport's key scheduling ring fence that exist.#airportcapacity #airportmanagement #slotmanagement #datavisualisation #australianaviation #sydneyairport #sydneyairportdemandmanagementact1997

.....on going progress on the IAH Terminal B Transformation which includes Page's work on the Terminal Building..........initial demo of the East Helix shown in the video. The second video of one of the bridges spanning the terminal roadway to the ex-flight stations, shows one of the trickiest parts of the de-construction as it occurs over active vehicle traffic lanes.

Congratulations to LBG!Passenger traffic at three of the four airports serving Los Angeles County continued to soar in March, with Long Beach Airport hitting an all-time record high for passengers during the month. Meanwhile, at Los Angeles International Airport, growth in domestic passengers has all but vanished, slowing the recovery to pre-pandemic levels. Collectively, Ontario International, Hollywood-Burbank and Long Beach airports saw 1.42 million passengers in March, up exactly 20% from March of 2019. Both March and the first quarter saw continued drops in cargo tonnage figures at LAX and Ontario airports, which together handle more than 98% of the air cargo from all four of the airports serving the county. Cargo tonnage in March fell about 5% at LAX and Ontario compared to the same month last year. Howard Fine/Los Angeles Business Journal#LBG #airports

Informative article from Richard Mellor in the British Airways The Club magazine discussing the removal of the 100ml limits for liquids in your carry-on hand baggage when departing from UK airports.I think even the most organised and seasoned travellers amongst us, have at least on one occasion fallen foul of this rule, having to ditch a favourite fragrance or sparking a frantic search for the transparent bags whilst palpably sensing the annoyance and disdain from those fellow travellers queuing up behind.Still some time before the rest of the UK airports join Teeside Airport and London City Airport in fully implementing this change, with only one of the five busiest UK airports expected to meet the June 2024 deadline – that being London Luton Airport. #flying #airports #liquids #airportsecurity #handluggage #packing #travel #travelindustry #holidays #airtravel https://lnkd.in/eC6eswVUedium=Email&utm_campaign=PRD_CCT_LOY_The-Club-EC128_Email-V1_EN_20240222&utm_term=CPM-000009676243&utm_content=314256

Happy to see that the DfT has finally released our 2019 report on slot allocation. While the aviation landscape may have shifted since we wrote our report, our insights and conclusions are probably still relevant. There's no easy answer for how slots ought to be allocated at very congested airports. The current system works well enough at airports where demand is just slightly more than the available slots, but it doesn't guarantee a good outcome for customers or for society where there is lots of congestion. And it is likely to break down when used to allocate a large number of new slots at a previously congested airport.Auctions are often touted as a solution, but they come with their own practical challenges and risks. Slots are currently allocated at 5-minute intervals, and airlines have complex sets of preferences around which slots are complements and which are substitutes. Running an auction at that level of detail may be too complex and may fail completely. The question is, are the potential benefits from auctions large enough to make taking those risks worthwhile?https://lnkd.in/dMP-jtXT
